DINING

NEAR THE GRADUATE CENTER

The Graduate Center is located near Koreatown. There are a large number of Korean restaurants on 32nd and 33rd St. between 5th and 6th, some of them quite inexpensive, some more upscale. Walk down the street and check out the menus in the window!

The Graduate Center is also located near "Curry Hill", where there are a lot of inexpensive Indian restaurants, mostly between Park and 3rd in the upper 20s. Here is a list of some.

Also not far from the Graduate Center:

Artisanal (menu): Upscale French bistro/brasserie, known especially for its cheeses. Expensive. 2 Park Ave, New York 10016 (At 32nd St). Call ahead for a reservation. (212) 725-8585

Second Avenue Deli (menu): Classic New York deli: great pastrami, corned beef, pickles, and matzoh ball soup, among other specialties. Inexpensive to moderately expensive. 162 E 33rd St, New York 10016 (Btwn Lexington & 3rd Ave) (212) 677-0606

Baoguette (menu): Good, inexpensive Vietnamese sandwiches. 61 Lexington Ave, New York 10010 (Btwn 25th & 26th St) (212) 532-1133

Brick Oven Pizza 33 (menu): Good, inexpensive pizza by the slice, as well as whole pizza. 489 3rd Ave, at 33rd St. (212) 545-9191

Blue Smoke (menu): Excellent barbecue, expensive as barbecue goes, but very good. Also a nice place for a drink, though can get crowded. ELSEWHERE:

The Jane is near the West Village, where there is a huge number of restaurants of all sorts. There is a particularly large number of Italian restaurants but there is also pretty much any other kind that you want to look for. Here are a couple places, one inexpensive and casual, the other two somewhat more upscale, though still fairly casual:

'Ino (menu) -- Inexpensive, known for its excellent panini. Can get crowded but a fun spot. 21 Bedford St, New York 10012 (Btwn 6th Ave & Downing St) (212) 989-5769

Bar Pitti (menu): Classic northern Italian trattoria fare in a lively setting with outdoor seating. Fairly casual, medium priced. 268 Sixth Ave., New York, NY 10014 nr. Bleecker St. Call ahead for a reservation. (212) 982-3300

Jean Claude (menu): Similar in price and atmosphere to Bar Pitti. 137 Sullivan Street, New York, NY (between Prince and Houston). Call ahead for availability. (212) 475-9232

The Upper West Side is home to a number of nice, fairly priced restaurants. Here is an example:

MUSEUMS

There are too many museums to list in Manhattan. Here are a few favorites:

Museum of Modern Art (map): Perhaps the world's foremost collection of modern art. Free on Friday nights from 4 to 8. 11 West 53rd Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues. (212) 708-9400

Metropolitan Museum of Art (map): New York's foremost collection of art from the ancient period up to the early 20th century. 1000 5th Avenue, near 82nd St. (212) 535-7710

The Guggenheim Museum (map): This Frank Lloyd Wright is known for its trademark spiral viewing area. Houses a collection of modern art, with frequent special exhibitions. 1071 5th Avenue, New York, NY, near 89th St. (212) 423-3500

The Whitney Museum of American Art (map): This museum specializing in American art is currently exhibiting its famed Biennial, a carefully curated collection of the best of the last two years of American art. 945 Madison Avenue, New York, NY (near 75th St.). (212) 570-3600


MUSIC

Lincoln Center (map): New York's famed classical music complex is easily accessible by subway from the Graduate Center and most of the hotels participants are staying at. Broadway between 62nd and 65th. 212.875.5000 See also Jazz at Lincoln Center, which is nearby a few blocks south on Broadway (212) 258-9800

Many of New York's best jazz clubs are in the West Village, not far from the Jane hotel. For example:
